Study abroad is such a profoundly transformative experience--and is also a risky experiment: take students away from their known support system, potentially away from access to prescriptions, off their normal routines, maybe even in a different language---All during a time when their brains are going through dramatic changes (neural pruning! risk taking!).
Yet, YET! It is an incredible growth-inducing journey, which is why we do it!
This mini-course is for students who are about to leave on study abroad experiences to help them prepare for the emotional journey. The course promotes this concept of psychological flexility and does not pathologize discomfort--but does give practical ideas & exercises for young adults who are experiencing disruption to their normal way of being. In the course everyone will make an individualized Travel Wellness Plan to proactively reflect on how to deal with mental health related distress.
We are Licensed Mental Health Counselors who have lived, worked, volunteered, and studied abroad. Our goal is to make study abroad safer for all and give students the preparation they need so that they can lean in to this transformative experience with authenticity, resilience, and maturity.
