Difficult Students and The Need for Resiliency

Today's students are away from home and thrust into a world they have had less opportunities to interact in than students pre-covid and pre-cell phones (!!!), two powerful forces that may be risk factors for mental health struggles. Young people are reporting more and more impairing mental health symptoms. You are encountering young people with less robust coping skills and a lower threshold for discomfort.

Study abroad is itself removing comforts and adding stressors. We know that is a great recipe for growth and it seems to increasingly be a recipe for students to struggle and even withdraw from programming. In this session, we'll talk about how to set the stage for resiliency: how to prime students for encountering the challenge, build their capability to tolerate the discomfort, learn about themselves and the world, enjoy the unique experience, and return home with a more flexible, mature, and healthy perspective on life.

This session is a 60-minute session meant for on-the-ground professionals--and everyone is welcome to join!
